First Grady Sizemore went down with a left knee contusion and now Asdrubal Cabrera has been lost for at least 6-8 weeks with a fractured forearm. Cabrera was injured when he collided with Jhonny Peralta diving for a ground ball in the 1st inning against Tampa Bay on Monday night.
Asdrubal will now go to Baltimore for surgery to place screws in the bone to stabilize the fracture and hopefully that will enable him to heal quickly. In the meantime the Indians have called up Jason Donald from AAA Columbus to take his place. Donald was having a solid year at the plate and defensively for the Clippers while playing primarily second base. He is a natural shortstop and with Cabrera sidelined he will return to his most comfortable position defensively.
What hurts even more is that Cabrera has been one of the most consistent performers for an Indians team that is already struggling to score runs. Trevor Crowe assumes the lead-off spot for now but, it wouldn't surprise me to see Grady Sizemore move back to the top of the line-up when he returns. Grady has been searching for his stroke all season long and moving him back to the lead-off spot could help him find it again. Of course that is assuming that his ailing left knee is not something that will be a lingering problem.
Going into the season we knew this was a young team with little margin for error. As the injuries pile up the and the Indians get even younger we could be in store for some serious growing pains.
