A Second Look At 10 Guys We Wanted The Indians To Acquire: Part One
May 20, 2009
Last October, Junkyard put together a list of 10 players we wanted the Indians to pursue for their 2009 roster.
Well,, um, er, the Indians didn’t acquire ANY of the 10 players.
So, just for fun, we’ve decided to check how our “Most Wanted 10” are doing this season.
And make some snap judgments on whether the Indians were wise to ignore our advice.
We’ll do five now - and examine the remaining five later this week.
1. Brian Roberts, second base: Flirting with a .300 batting average and on pace to match or beat his career high in homers (18). Ranks in the American League top 10 for stolen bases.
Verdict: We don’t care how well Asdrubal Cabrera has been playing at second. The Indians STILL should have acquired Roberts.
The guy is playing All-Star level ball this season - and he would have provided the Indians with some veteran leadership.
2. Kevin Kouzmanoff, third base: A .230ish batting average and low power numbers.
Verdict: The Indians rightly ignored Junkyard’s advice.
3. Adam Dunn, outfielder: Splitting time between first, right and left field, he’s among the National League’s leaders in homers and runs batted in.
Verdict: As of this writing, Dunn has as many runs batted in (32) as Indians Ben Francisco, Matt LaPorta and Ryan Garko have managed TOGETHER while splitting time in left field.
The Indians should have listened to Junkyard’s advice on Dunn
4. Matt Cain, starting pitcher: Tied for 11th in wins (4) among National Leauge pitchers.
Verdict: Cain sure would look good as the Indians No. 2 starter right now.
Still, the Indians probably would have had to give up Victor Martinez to get Cain from San Francisco during the off-season. The same Victor Martinez who’s leading the American League in hitting.
It’s a close call, but…we'll say the Indians were wise to ignore Junkyard’s advice.
5 Boof Bonser, pitcher: Had season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder in March.
Verdict: Obviously, the Indians were wise to ignore Junkyard’s advice.
