5 Wednesday Thoughts From The Junkyard
June 10, 2009
1. Why does Junkyard have this nagging feeling that the Cavs' apparent pursuit of Rasheed Wallace has “LeBron thinks we should get Rasheed Wallace so we better try and make him happy” written all over it?
(Just like “LeBron thinks Sasha Pavlovic should play more during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final, so we better give Pavlovic some major minutes.”)
It would be a huge mistake for Cleveland to sign Wallace.
The guy appeared to flat-out quit during last month’s Cavs-Detroit playoff series.
2. There’s no debate about it:
The Cavs must bite the bullet and slightly overpay big man Anderson Varejao - if it takes that to keep him from leaving as a free agent.
As a $10 million player, Varejao isn’t going to be any better than he’s been at his current $5.7 million salary.
But he’s clearly more valuable to the Cavs than any other NBA team he’d join.
Can anyone actually argue otherwise?
3. He’s only hitting .194, but there’s something we like about Indians rookie infielder Luis Valbuena. Here’s hoping the Indians continue to show patience with Valbuena - and keep him around when Asdrubral Cabrera returns from the disabled list.
4. We’ll say it again: the more Mark DeRosa keep hitting, the more the Indians should cash in and trade him to a surefire contender.
DeRosa seems like the perfect solution for either of Boston’s two major problems - shortstop or designated hitter.
We still say that DeRosa for Brad Penny trade makes perfect sense - especially if the Red Sox include a decent prospect.
5. We like the Browns’ pursuit of veteran defensive back Mike Brown.
Brown is a hard-hitting tackler - but the key word there is “tackler.”
He doesn’t focus on making showy “blow ‘em up” hits that might appear on football highlight shows - but don’t always bring down ball carriers and receivers.
You can’t say the same for numerous Browns defensive backs in recent years.
